How this works - Pollution.mt

How it works

Pollution.mt provides hourly updates on air pollution in Malta and compares it to WHO standards. Please note that this platform is not affiliated with ERA or any government agency.

ERA stations record air quality data

The ERA air quality monitoring stations around Malta continuously collect real-time data on air quality on an hourly basis. This data is available to the public through the ERA website. Please note that this platform is not affiliated with ERA or any government agency.

ERA Real Time Air Quality Network

We process the data

Smoggy, our friendly air quality data bot, collects the air quality data and compares it to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and EU guidelines. The data is then presented in a way that's easy to understand. Of course, this is subjective and if you find it difficult to comprehend, please reach out.

Air quality rating

The air quality ratings are based on the WHO and EU guidelines for 4 different pollutants; Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5, PM10, Ozone (O3), and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). The air pollution levels for these pollutants are compared to the WHO guidelines and the overall air quality status is based on the worst of these 4 pollutants.

Gauge

When the pollutant level is below 85% of the recommended guideline, the air quality is deemed good. A pollutant level between 85% and 100% is considered moderate, while a level exceeding the recommended guideline is considered poor. If the pollutant level surpasses 150% of the recommended guideline, the air quality is classified as very poor.

Please note that this rating system is arbitrary. If you have recommendations on how to improve the system, please get in touch.
